SendMASKED

Help

SendMasked replaces the personal data in a text with codes before you give it to an AI, and swaps it back when the answer arrives. The AI learns what the text is about, but not who it concerns. Everything happens on your iPhone or Mac.

How it works

01

Add your text

Paste text into the box or pick a file: PDF, Word, Excel, email, image or plain text.

02

The app masks it

Names, ID numbers, addresses, amounts and more become codes like [PERSON_1]. The same detail gets the same code throughout.

03

Copy to the AI

Tap Copy masked text, open the AI chat you use and paste. Shortcuts to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini appear right after copying.

04

Get the names back

Copy the answer in the chat and go back to the app. On iPhone, tap Paste; on Mac it happens by itself. The codes turn back into the real details.

Example

Your text

John Doe (SSN 123-45-6789) at 250 Maple Avenue hasn't paid rent of $3,700. Can we terminate the lease?

What the AI receives

[PERSON_1] (SSN [NATIONAL_ID_1]) at [ADDRESS_1] hasn't paid rent of [AMOUNT_1]. Can we terminate the lease?

The answer you get back

Before terminating John Doe's lease, you need to serve a written notice about the $3,700 in unpaid rent …

The key between codes and real details stays on your device. Neither the AI service nor we can see it.

The app removes who it's about, not the context. Details like role, workplace and date can sometimes, taken together, still point to someone, so read the masked text before you copy it.

Common questions

How do I use the Safari extension?

Turn it on in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions › SendMasked on iPhone and iPad, or in Safari › Settings › Extensions on Mac, and allow the sites (chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, grok.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, chat.mistral.ai, chat.deepseek.com). The Mask button then appears by the chat field. Text you paste is masked right away, and Show real details lets you read the AI's answer with the real details – only you see them. Undo is in the bubble after each masking.

Why isn't my attachment in the chat masked?

The extension only reaches text: what you type and what you paste, even when the chat turns long text into an attachment. Files you upload, such as PDF or Word, you mask in the app and then paste the masked text.

Can I see the original and the masked text at the same time?

On iPad, Mac and an unfolded iPhone they appear next to each other when the window is wide enough, and they scroll together. The AI's answer works the same way: codes on the left, real details on the right. The Side by side button switches back to a single pane. Narrower screens show one pane at a time.

What gets masked?

People, national ID numbers, phone numbers, email, addresses, bank details (account numbers, IBAN, giro, OCR, card numbers), amounts, companies and organisations, property designations, and case, customer, contract and invoice numbers.

What doesn't get masked?

Places, dates, postal codes and the content itself, such as health conditions or what a contract is about. Once the person can't be identified, the rest doesn't need hiding, and the AI needs the context to give a useful answer.

The app missed something. How do I mask it myself?

Select the word in the text and choose Mask. The same word is then masked everywhere in the document. Use the arrow next to it to pick a type, such as person or organisation.

How do I unmask something?

Tap the code in the text and choose Unmask. The Original button shows the whole text as it was before masking.

What happens if the app closes before I paste the answer?

Nothing. The key that turns the codes back into names is stored encrypted on the device for 24 hours, so you can open the app again and paste the answer. Choose the time in Settings › General › Stored data: 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, until you delete it, or only while the app is open. That is also where you find Saved keys and Clear everything now.

Do I need an API key?

No. By default you copy and paste yourself, and nothing leaves your device until you do. If you'd rather skip copying, add your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. The app then sends the masked text directly and shows the answer with the real names.

Why do results differ between my devices?

On iPhone 15 Pro and later, and on Macs with Apple silicon, the app also uses Apple Intelligence to find more names. Older devices use only the base engine, which misses more unusual names. Review extra carefully there.

What are rule files?

A rule file tailors masking to a field: Property, Accounting, Legal, Health or HR. Choose it under More › Masking. Your own rule files (.sendmaskedrules) are imported and shared under Settings › Rules.

What does "Also mask uncertain matches" mean?

It's on by default. The app then masks what it's unsure about too, so nothing slips through because you missed reviewing it. Turn it off under Settings › Recognition if you'd rather approve uncertain matches yourself.

How do I know nothing is sent?

Turn on airplane mode. Masking, reviewing and copying work exactly as usual, because the app doesn't use the network until you send with your own API key.

How does the subscription work?

Free gives 10 maskings a month. Pro is unlimited: $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year in the US, £7.99 or £59.99 in the UK, and the local equivalent elsewhere. Apple handles the subscription. Settings › Subscription has Restore purchases if you've changed devices.
